Speaker: Prof Michel Hockx (SOAS, University of London)
Date: Wednesday, 24 February 2016
Time: 14:00 – 16:00 (with refreshments to follow)
Venue: A6.03
Chair: Dr David Feng

OPEN TO ALL

This paper surveys the development of online creative writing in Mainland China in the past fifteen years. It demonstrates how online communities are bringing about unprecedented changes in the structure of the Chinese literary field, both through literary and aesthetic innovations and through challenges to the established system of publishing. Both high-end and low-end forms of literary production are taken into account. The Chinese phenomena are discussed against the background of recent debates in western scholarship about the concept of “world literature,” which so far have largely excluded online texts.

Bio:

Michel Hockx (b. 1964) is Professor of Chinese at SOAS, University of London, and founding director of the SOAS China Institute. He studied Chinese language and literature at Leiden University in The Netherlands, and at Liaoning and Beijing Universities in China. His research focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese literary communities, their publications, their values, and their interaction with state regulators. He has also published on modern Chinese poetry. His most recent monograph, Internet Literature in China, came out with Columbia University Press in 2015.

‘EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON LOVE’:

CHINESE CHRISTIANITY AND THE PARTY

Speaker: Dr GerdaWielander
Date: Monday 5th March
Time: 2-4pm
Venue: A 6.8 Maria Hewlett Building (A Block) Harrow Campus
Chair: Prof Hugo de Burgh
OPEN TO ALL

This talk asks the question what influence Christian values have had on social and political values in post-socialist China. Christianity, understood as an ideological source of social and political values, informs both official ideology and ‘dissident’ ideology, albeit in different ways and to a different extent, and is an increasingly accepted source of social moral and ethics in contemporary China. I argue that while we tend to think of China as an atheist, secular state, it is in fact vital to understand the importance religion plays in the state’s response to emerging new values in society without giving ground in terms of a more democratic system.

Biography:

Gerda Wielander’s research interest lies in contemporary China’s social and political development. Most recently she has been interested in the way Christian belief is influencing and shaping political discourse in contemporary China. She has published several articles in this field and has been awarded an AHRC Fellowship in 2012 to complete her book on Christian values in Communist China (to be published with Routledge in 2013).

GerdaWielander was educated in Vienna and Beijing. She obtained an M.A. in Chinese Studies in 1990 with a dissertation on Liang Qichao’s historiography, including a first translation into German of Liang’s “XinShixue” (New Historiography). Her PhD (1995) investigated the Malaysian Chinese evaluation of China’s Democracy Movement (1976-1989) as expressed in the region’s vibrant Chinese press.

Gerda is Principal Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the Undergraduate Languages Programme in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages. She has taught at a number of British universities including SOAS and Cambridge before coming to Westminster in a full-time capacity.

‘China and the New Green Deal’, a China Media Centre conference, was held in Parliament in June 2009. It was the 6th conference on China held by CMC in Parliament.

WH2

A one-day CMC seminar was held in the Houses of Parliament to address the implications of China’s management of its environmental challenges for government policy and British business. It was hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on China and sponsored by Norton Rose. 170 people attended, from business, the policy world and media.

One of CMC’s research themes, along with regulation, journalism and innovation in the media, is the relationship between media and environment. This seminar is one of several initiatives connected with this theme, including a workshop at Caijing magazine in  Peking, producing a report on journalism and the environment for International Media Support and being knowledge partner for the October Wilton Park Conference on China’s environment.

This is a conference of the China Media Centre for the APPCG, with Knowledge Partner, Norton Rose LLP. With assistance from the Chinese Embassy and Chinadialogue http://www.chinadialogue.net/

China Media Centre 2009 Autumn-Winter Seminar

Representations of China in the UK Press

untitledSpeaker: Prof. Colin Sparks
Date: Wednesday 18th November, 2009
Time: 2.00-4.00 pm
Venue: MHW_A4-4 Harrow Campus,
University of Westminster

Abstract:

The Chinese government, together with many ordinary Chinese people, particularly students, are frequently angered by the way in which China is portrayed in the western media. This anger, however, is a response to the coverage of particular incidents and is not based on real knowledge of how China is covered on a day to day basis.

This presentation reports on a project that made a start on a more systematic study of the subject. The analysis covers the UK national press reporting of China during 2008 and presents data on the frequency and distribution of stories. It also reports a more detailed qualitative study of China in the elite and popular press, demonstrating that analyses concentrating on small-circulation up-market newspapers risk seriously misrepresenting the ways in which China is portrayed in the press. The seminar will be in English but some of the material is available in translation.

Biography:

Prof. Colin Sparks has worked with and advised the European Union, Unesco, the Open Society Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the British Council, Universities in the US, Europe and East Asia, and many other organisations, academic, official, and non-governmental. He was one of the founders of Media, Culture and Society, and he continues to play an active role as managing editor, as well as editing issues on a regular basis. He was also a founder of the European Institute for Communication and Culture. He has organised several of its colloquia, and edited themed issues of its journal Javnost/The Public.
His current research interests include the comparative study of media systems undergoing rapid change. He is particularly interested in comparing the media systems of post-communist countries with those of other societies that have moved away from different forms of dictatorship towards more democratic forms of political rule. His other major current interest is in theories of media and communication.
