Abstract: Rapidly changing audience, audience habits and consumption patterns pose major challenges for all traditional media outfits. Market forces and changing audience aside, international media, especially traditionally public-funded international Chinese language media face its own unique set of challenges such as a political, cultural and commercial sensitivity, as well as blockage and market entry difficulties in Mainland China. How does an international Chinese media institution adapt and stay relevant in the digital world? In this presentation, the Editor-in-Chief of BBC Chinese Service Howard Zhang will share some of his observations and practical experiences on how the BBC as a whole as well as BBC’s Chinese language service are adapting to the digital world.

Howard Zhang

Officially appointed Editor-in-Chief of BBC Chinese in January 2017, Howard Zhang is tasked with transforming BBC Chinese into a service fit for the challenges of digital age.  He is a seasoned journalist who first joined the BBC back in 2000, with years of experience in field interviews, and in radio, TV and digital content production. Prior to joining the BBC, he worked for a number of media organisations in Canada.

The UK Hebei Society, The China Media Centre, The University of Westminster and the Chinese province of Hebei will be organising a photographic exhibition of the province of Hebei. The opening ceremony will be on 31st October 2015 at 2pm.

The current spirit of co-operation between China and the UK is exemplified by the many state visits between the countries, including that of President Xi during October 2015. Many opportunities are being created between our countries, and the province of Hebei wishes to further foster this co-operation.

The exhibition will be held in Fyvie Hall, University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London W1B 2HW. Photographs being shown are grouped into four categories:

1. History of Hebei
The Province is rich in historical significance; and here, a part of this history will be displayed

2. Colours of Hebei
Embodying the life of the Province

3. Modern Hebei
Showcasing the highly developed nature of Hebei

4. Olympic Hebei
The international sporting activities of Hebei province

The province has much to offer to the visitor and those who would work with and within Hebei, whether that be inwards, outwards or in partnership. It should be remembered that China will be hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, with many events in Hebei and Britain is seeking to be involved in organising the staging of the event. There are already strong links in education between Hebei and Britain, and the project for a large new international education complex within the province will produce an international centre of excellence; overseas partners are actively sought for participation.

With so many exciting developments in progress and yet to come, we would be delighted by your presence at this event. The exhibition itself will run until 6th November 2015.
